Key Things For Operations Managers To Remember When It Comes To Line Marking

Line Markings are a key element of any manufacturing facility. They serve a variety of purposes from safety to organisation. Here are a few key things to consider when it comes to line marking your warehouse.

1. COLOUR

In a factory, there are various areas for different stages. For example, if you are manufacturing a product there will be an area for the raw product to be stored, then separate areas for each stage of the manufacturing process. Using coloured line markings is the best way to demarcate these areas. Alternatively, you could coat the floor in different colours. For hazard areas, we recommend you use a striped line for differentiation.

2. WIDTH

Line marking can be done in pretty much any width you require. But having the right width for your specific area is important. For areas where there are only pedestrians and no vehicular traffic, the width can be as small as 50mm. This is because a pedestrian can easily see a line marking this small. For areas where there is vehicular traffic, such as forklifts or trucks, the width needs to be a minimum of 100mm wide so it can be seen while driving the vehicle.

3. STYLES

There are several different styles of line marking and it is important to use them in the right application. Different styles include:

  • Pedestrian walkways
  • Driver safety zones
  • Hazard areas
  • Fire exits
  • Directions and instruction

These are just a few of the many different styles of line markings you might find in a manufacturing facility.

4. LONGEVITY

Longevity is the hardest thing to predict with line marking. There are a number of different products out there that boast varying lifetimes. Mainly the longevity comes down to two things, adhesion and durability. If the adhesion is not good, the line marking will not last and if the durability is not good, it won’t last either. Make sure you consider these things when you are choosing line marking to ensure you get the best longevity possible.

5. MAINTENANCE AND CARE

Yes, that’s right, you should maintain and care for your line markings. This includes keeping the surrounding areas clean to ensure that dirt and debris don’t wear your line marking out quicker when driven over, as well as cleaning them regularly to ensure they always remain visible.

Remember these 5 key things next time your factory needs its line marking upgraded and your factory will be up with the latest Australian Standards and Lean Manufacturing requirements.
